  DARJEELING POLICE ----- OVER THE YEAR  

Darjeeling Police force was established on 27th  November’ 1839 when the Government of Bengal sanctioned a small police establishment of one writer at Twenty Rupees per month and 4 Chaprassis at Rupees five each per month.

In 1840-41 the force was increased to 2 officers ( ASIs) and 12 footmen ( Constables).

In 1853 there were 3 Darogas ( Sis), 10 jamadars ( ASIs), 8 Daffars ( HGs) and 95 constables. There were 3 Police Stations sadar, Khoribari and Phansidewa each  under a Daroga  and 12 Chowkies of Patrol Posts under Jamaders of Mohurries.

In 1860 there were three Darogas (SIs), 13 Jamaders ( ASIs) and 102 Constables.

In 1872 the regular Police Force were consisted of :-

One District Superintendent maintained at a salary of Rs. 800.00 per month, 3 Inspectors of Police on a salary  upwards Rs. 100.00 per month, 32 Sis on less than Rs.100.00 Per month and 177 Constables at a little above Rs. 8.00 a month. The total cost of the regular Police of Darjeeling District in 1872 amounted to Rs. 4,16,110/- annas and 8 paisa

In the old Darjeeling District Gazetteer published in 1907, O’ Malley has stated that in 1905 the Police department consisted of a District Superintendent of  police, 5 Inspectors,24 Sub-Inspectors, 02 Surgents, 49 Head Constables and 351 Constables.The District was divided in 4 Police Stations, 8 out  Posts(OPs) and 14 Petrol Post (P.P.). Owing to mountainous nature of the terrain and difficulties of communications,the force was proportionately stronger than the other parts of the province( state).

In 1980 the District  police was headed by a Superintendent of Police, 3 Deputy Superintendent of Police at District Head Quarters, 2 Sub – Divitional Officer at Siliguri and Kalimpong and 19 Inspectors of Police. There were 13 Police Stations.

In the year 2008 police set up is headed by a  Superintendent of Police, assisted by 04 Additional Superintendent  of Polices, 07 Deputy Superintendent  of Police , 1 Sub-Divisional Police Officer, 24 Inspectors (UB) and 02 Lady ASIs (UB), 1285 Constables (M) (UB) & 73 Constables (F) (UB), 87 Police Drivers, 1 Reserved Inspector of Police (AB), 11 SIs (AB), 77 ASIs (AB), 598 Constables in the Armed Branch & 2 Armourer.

In addition to the above force the District Police is assisted by 921 west Bengal Home Guards & 111 west Bengal National Volunteer Force.

Nw there are 18 Police Stations, 2 Investgation Centre, 06 Out Post , 12 Town Out Post, 09 Petrol Post, 22 Indo Nepal Check Post.

The Traffic  Unit was introduced in the year 1982 from Distric resource. In the year 1985 officially the sanctioned strength was received from  P.D. vide G.O.  No.8095-PL dtd. 18.10.1985 of H.C. -1 and Constable- 14.

In 1990 the total strength was S.I-01, HC-5 & Const-52.

In the year 2002 the strength of Traffic Siliguri was SI-08, ASI-7 and Const- 77 vide G.O. No.1484/PL/2002.

The Present Set-up (2008) of traffic police in Siliguri is headed by a dy. Superintendent of Police assisted by 10 Sis ,12 ASIs, 87 Constables, 10 NVF and 33 Hgs. There are 2 four wheeler and 12 two wheeler under disposal of Siliguri Traffic.

The Siliguri Traffic unit Works under 5 Traffic Guards viz(1) Venus More Traffic Guard, (2) Panitanki More Traffic Guard , (3) Jalpaimore Traffic Guard, (4) Darjeeling More Traffic Guard and (5) Bagdogra Traffic Guard  vide Darjeeling District Order No.2990 dtd.02.08.08.

A part from this there are separate traffic  unit under the charge of one SI in all the three Hill Sub-Divisions viz Sadar,Kalimpong and Kurseong.
